\"\"<\/a>On Thursday, May 13th, I had the privilege to be invited to the\u00a0press reception for the Fantastical World’s of Ray Harryhausen<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span>,\u00a0held at the\u00a0 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/strong> located in Beverly Hills, California.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Those fortune enough to attend this special preview were\u00a0heard saying ”\u00a0wow” and\u00a0“amazing”, at each and every turn of\u00a0the treasures showcased in the museum. Many people kept saying, “I remember that !”,\u00a0regarding the iconic and\u00a0timeless characters Ray\u00a0Harryhausen<\/em> has created for decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Each display had a description of the puppets, artwork, and story boards from Ray’s classic films and fans were able to\u00a0enjoy clips of Ray’s films playing near the displays, as well as clips of Ray describing how he\u00a0creates his magic.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Featured in the beautifully presented\u00a0exhibition,\u00a0are\u00a0the rare and iconic original\u00a0puppets,\u00a0drawings,\u00a0behind-the-scenes photographs, and storyboards, preserved\u00a0by the master artist\u00a0and storyteller himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a kid, I remember how enthralled and amazed I was (and still am),\u00a0at the “creatures” that were in each of Ray’s films. To me, they were not just\u00a0puppets<\/em>, but were actual breathing, living beings,\u00a0with their own personalities and traits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ray breathed life in\u00a0them in a way that nobody else did, nor in my view, has done since.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I don’t think I could pick a favorite character, as they all were “so cool”, but the Centaur, <\/em>Cyclops, and Medusa<\/em> were pretty close. I used to\u00a0sculpt them in clay in art class\u00a0as well as draw them. Ray’s characters also helped me and others,\u00a0learn about Greek mythology as kids, without us even realizing it. Ray characters and stories were always\u00a0so exciting and filled with action, that\u00a0we had no idea we were learning too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ray has always\u00a0lovingly\u00a0preserved just about everything from his\u00a0prolific career and on April 10th, 1986 Ray started the Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation.<\/em> The foundation is\u00a0a<\/em> charitable Trust\u00a0to protect Ray\u2019s name and body of work, as well as archiving, preserving and restoring his extensive collection. Ray’s daughter, Vanessa<\/em>, is also a Trustee for her father.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 1992 Ray\u00a0received the\u00a0much deserved Academy\u00a0Awards Gordon E. Sawyer Award<\/strong><\/span><\/span>, <\/em>which recognizes technological ontributions to the film industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One\u00a0of\u00a0 those contributions by Ray was Dynamation<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong> .\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dynamation<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span> is an original technique that allows armatured models to be integrated with live action\u00a0film. It gave Ray’s work a seamless integration between his characters (puppets), and the live action actors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As well as creating the special effects and puppet characters for many\u00a0movies, Ray has\u00a0also\u00a0produced and directed\u00a0many films.\u00a0He\u00a0has received credit for writer (story),\u00a0for a few of the iconic and still popular Sinbad<\/strong><\/em> films.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    This is an original stop motion puppet Ray created as a test to do the alien effects for the 1953 hit, War of The Worlds<\/em>. Sadly, Ray\u00a0ended up not doing the\u00a0effects, but\u00a0you can\u00a0see\u00a0his test film, this puppet, and much, much more\u00a0on Ray’s great DVD, Ray Haryhausen: The Early Years Collection<\/a>. This 2 disc set is one of the most comprehensive productions about Ray and his work that\u00a0I have ever seen. It is a must have.
