{"id":11864,"date":"2012-12-30T16:03:30","date_gmt":"2012-12-30T21:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.moviepropcollectors.com\/magazine\/?p=11864"},"modified":"2012-12-30T16:03:30","modified_gmt":"2012-12-30T21:03:30","slug":"piano-from-casablanca-hammers-500000-at-sothebys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.moviepropcollectors.com\/magazine\/piano-from-casablanca-hammers-500000-at-sothebys\/","title":{"rendered":"Piano from &#8220;Casablanca&#8221; hammers $500,000 at Sotheby&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviepropcollectors.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/SothebysBanner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11867\" alt=\"SothebysBanner\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviepropcollectors.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/SothebysBanner.jpg\" width=\"206\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a>On December 14, 2012, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/auctions\/2012\/casablanca-sale-n08877\/overview.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sotheby\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> auctioned a piano played in the <em>Humphrey Bogart\/Ingrid Bergman<\/em>, film,\u00a0<em>Casablanca <\/em>for $500,000.\u00a0 Factoring Sotheby&#8217;s buyers premium, the total paid for the instrument was $602,500.\u00a0 The piano was played by actor, <em>Dooley Wilson<\/em>, as <em>Sam<\/em>, in the Paris flashback scene while <em>Sam<\/em> sings \u201c<em>As Time Goes By<\/em>,\u201d <em>Rick<\/em> (<em>Bogart<\/em>) and <em>Ilsa<\/em> (<em>Bergman<\/em>) lean on the piano and drink champagne.\u00a0During this scene <em>Bogart<\/em> says the famous line: \u201c<em>Here\u2019s lookin\u2019 at you, kid<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 210px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviepropcollectors.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/SothebysPiano.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"SothebysPiano\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviepropcollectors.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/SothebysPiano.png\" width=\"516\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The piano had originally been discovered\u00a0 by Dr Gary Milan, who bought the piano from a prop house in 1983. Milan sold the piano at a Sotheby\u2019s auction in 1988 for $154,000 to a collector who consigned the piano for this auction. Milan also purchased the film\u2019s other famous piano from Rick&#8217;s Cafe\u00a0 in 83.
